Mother’s Day is fast approaching- the day when children, young and old, try our best to make our mom’s feel special. For mothers of younger children, this often comes with a host of craft projects that decorate the refrigerator or take a place of honor on a shelf. Our AYS staff members try their best to come up with new and creative Mother’s Day crafts for the AYS kids to do each year (thank you, Pinterest).
One AYS site tried out Prism Candle Holders, which was a successful craft attempt for most of the participants, while only a couple asked to be excused to play Gaga Ball after gluing their first row of stones. Try out this easy, inexpensive craft for a unique gift any time of year.
What you need:
-One Mason jar per holder, any size
-Hot glue gun with glue sticks
-Clear craft glue (we used Loctite Go2 Glue)
-Glass stones
-Small paper plate, place mat, or other covering to protect workspace
First, count out how many stones you will need to make a complete row around the jar. Starting near the bottom of the jar, place a thin layer of craft glue for the first row directly on the jar. To make sure that the stones stayed put once a candle was lit and the glass got hot, we also put hot glue directly on the stones. Place the stones in a row around the bottom of the glass jar. Be careful not to put them too close together, which can cause buckling. Repeat this step all the way up the jar until you reach the top. If you want to be able to close the jar, be sure to stop before the lip of the jar so that you have room for your lid. Some of the children chose to decorate their lid with stones, too.
All you need is a tea light candle, and your jar is complete. Happy Mother’s Day!
